Championing the Common Good
IASJ’s Enduring Commitment to Justice and Integrity
Investor Advocates for Social Justice proudly stands on a legacy of nearly 50 years, grounded in a commitment to justice that is even more urgent now than when we began. Founded during a time when corporations were profiting from apartheid in South Africa, IASJ – formerly called the Tri-State Coalition for Responsible Investment – has always maintained a clear focus on its mission: to challenge and change systems that exploit people, harm the environment, and place profit over the common good. Today, we lean even more resolutely into that mission with the same unwavering passion, inspired by both our founding principles and the vital plea of Laudato Si’—Pope Francis’s vigorous call to care for the earth, our common home, and to be a voice for the vulnerable and against injustice and environmental degradation.
Laudato Si’ teaches that the cries of the earth and people experiencing poverty are intertwined, urging us to advocate for a unified approach through integral ecology. This philosophy drives us to confront the most pressing issues of our time – climate change, environmental degradation, racial injustice, and the exploitation of people. Psalm 37:27 says, “Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever.” Our faith-based imperative empowers us to use our rights and responsibilities as shareholders to hold corporations accountable. We advocate for good business practices that respect human rights, protect creation, and prioritize the common good. We believe that businesses have both a moral and a fiduciary duty – and an international human rights responsibility – to act ethically, transparently, and with respect for the communities they impact and the natural world we all rely upon. This is simply good business, and through our shareholder advocacy, we demand accountability, integrity, and corporate responsibility.
We are here to advance social, economic, and environmental justice,
and to advocate for a world where all creation is respected and protected.
As we look to the future, our commitment has become increasingly critical in the face of the consolidation of power and deepening political divides. These times make our mission more essential than ever, and we remain unyielding in this fight. Our history proves that when people of faith and conviction come together, we can challenge even the most entrenched powers. By leveraging our voice and resources, we champion our affiliates and impacted communities to help build a fairer, more sustainable world.
Our legacy and our future are united by a simple truth: We are here to advance social, economic, and environmental justice, and to advocate for a world where all creation is respected and protected. Our mission is unwavering, and our commitment is unshakable. Even in the most challenging political climates, and amidst forces beyond our control, we are ready to roll up our sleeves and work for justice. Foundationally, we are built for this. With courage and conviction, IASJ remains committed to trekking the road to justice.
